The Five Lodges Celebrating 250 Years of Freemasonry in Ayrshire

Celebrating Masonic History and Charity at the 5 Masters 250th Celebratory Meeting

By Bro Angus MacDonald RWM, Lodge Thistle 127

In the heart of Ayrshire, a remarkable event unfolded that not only celebrated a rich Masonic history but also showcased the power of charitable giving. On Saturday, 26th, the brethren of Lodge Thistle 127 had the distinct privilege of participating in the 1771-73, 5 Masters charity degree held at Tarbolton (Kilwinning) St. James No.135. As the Right Worshipful Master of Lodge Thistle 127, I found immense joy in representing our lodge on this historic occasion.

One of the highlights of the event was the presence of Lodge Thistle 127's dedicated members, around 24 in number, who were in attendance for the degree ceremony and the subsequent dinner. Our commitment to Masonic values was evident as we came together to mark a milestone in the history of several lodges.

The evening was graced by distinguished guests, including our Grand Master Mason Bro. Ramsay McGhee, Depute Grand Master Bro. William Gauld, and other notable figures in Scottish Freemasonry such as Bro. John McKenzie, Bro. Sam Peden, and Bro. Ronald Forbes. Depute Provincial Grand Master Stephen McConnachie, along with other Provincial Grand Lodge of Ayrshire members, added to the sense of camaraderie that permeated the event.

The 5 Masters charity degree was conducted in a truly unique manner, a testament to the creativity and unity of the participating lodges. Lodge Thistle 127 was represented not only by myself but also by Elijah Beattie PM, who admirably carried out the role of WSW, and Archie Chalmers PM (PPGM), the principal speaker of the evening. Archie Chalmers presented a captivating toast and shared a condensed history of the five lodges, each commemorating their 250 years of existence.

However, the true magnificence of the event lay in the charitable aspect. The brethren's dedication to Masonic charity shone brightly as a substantial donation of £7100 was raised for Whiteleys Retreat Children's Charity. This remarkable achievement far exceeded our initial expectations when we first conceptualised the idea just 12 weeks prior. The generosity of the brethren was evident through their contributions, raffle prizes, and ticket and token purchases, all of which contributed to this impressive total.

Yet, the event's impact extended beyond fundraising. The bond that developed between the participating lodges—Lodges 125, 126, 127, 133, and 135—was something truly special. The camaraderie that was fostered during this celebratory meeting has laid the foundation for future interactions and shared experiences. Lodge Thistle 127 eagerly anticipates visiting these lodges and warmly welcoming them in return, fostering enduring connections that exemplify the spirit of Masonry.

As the Right Worshipful Master of Lodge Thistle 127, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the brethren of our lodge for their unwavering support in the lead-up to and during this remarkable event. Your dedication, the raffle prizes you contributed, and your active participation all played a significant role in the evening's success. I also extend my thanks to all the brethren from the participating lodges, whose collective effort and Masonic values brought this event to life.

In conclusion, the 5 Masters 250th Celebratory Meeting stands as a testament to the power of Masonic unity, history, and charity. Our ability to come together, share in the celebrations of the past, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of those less fortunate is a reminder of the values that Freemasonry upholds. Let us all take pride in our achievements and continue to exemplify the very best of Masonic charity in Ayrshire and beyond.
